Loughborough
Loughborough is a large town in rural Leicestershire, in central England. It has a strong history in agriculture, industry, transport, and education. There was a settlement at Loughborough before the Roman invasion of Britain, and Loughborough is mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086).
Local industries include the world’s largest bell foundry, electrical engineering and the manufacture of hosiery. An early success in lace making was halted when Luddites destroyed the machinery in 1816.
There is currently one mainline railway station in Loughborough, on the Midland Main Line from London to Nottingham, but historically there were three lines through the town; one of these is now used by a steam heritage railway. The River Soar lies to the east of the town, and two canals run through the town; both the Leicester Navigation and the Loughborough Navigation now form part of the Grand Union Canal system.
